How often do you wash your clothes?

The practical (and slightly guilt-free) guide to making your favorite clothes last.

We've all done it: wear a sweater for two hours, and then straight to the wash. But did you know that washing too often wears down the fibers , dulls the colors, and increases your environmental footprint? The good news: some garments love to breathe a little between washes.

Here's your little guide: simple and useful for knowing when (and especially when not to) wash your second-hand clothes.

Why washing less is better

Each wash consumes water, energy, and textile fibers (yes, your cotton sweater loses a little of itself with each cycle). The result: the pieces wear out faster… and so does the planet.

Tip: before starting a load, think about “refreshing”: aerate, brush, or spray with a little water + vinegar (1:10) + a few drops of essential oil.

The basics of everyday life

Jeans, trousers and skirts

Frequency: every 4 to 5 outings (Levi's even recommends up to 10!)

Denim loves the cold and hates repeated washing. Air it out between wears (or freeze it overnight to neutralize odors).

Cotton or linen sweaters

Frequency: every 2 to 3 outings .

No stains? Simply let it air dry, then fold it up.

Shirts and blouses

Frequency: after 1 to 2 outings .

They come into direct contact with the skin. Wash in cold water and hang to dry immediately after washing to minimize creases.

The more delicate pieces

Dresses

Frequency: every 2 to 4 outings , depending on the material.

Gentle cycle + mesh. Between two ports, vent or pass a light jet of steam.

Coats and jackets

Frequency: 1 to 2 times per season maximum.

Ventilate regularly, brush gently. Gentle dry cleaning (or steam cleaning at home) is often sufficient.

Wool sweaters

Frequency: after 5 to 6 outings .

Wool is naturally antibacterial. Lay flat to maintain its shape.

“Contact” clothing

Underwear and swimwear

Frequency: after each use .

Delicate wash bag + mild soap. Avoid the dryer (goodbye to tired elastics).

Pyjamas and loungewear

Frequency: every 2 to 3 nights .

Cold wash recommended.

Sports sweaters and leggings

Frequency: after each workout .

For a simple, leisurely stroll? Ventilation is often sufficient.

Little tips for spacing out washes

  • Hang your clothes up after use (do not pile them up).
  • Spray water + vinegar (1:10) to neutralize odors.
  • Brush the surface (coats, woolens) to remove dust/lint.
  • Store in a dry, well-ventilated place to avoid moisture.

In summary

Making your clothes last is good for the planet and for your style. Learn to "listen" to your clothes and they'll respond.

These are general tips: always follow the care instructions first.
